Networking Terminology

The network has the below terminologies,

  • IP address
  • Protocol
  • Port number
  • MAC address
  • Socket
  • Connection oriented & connection less protocol

 

IP Address

It is a unique number that assigned to a node of the network e.g., 192.168.0.1. it composed of octets the range from 0 to 255. It has a logical address that can be changed.

Protocol

It is a set of rules basically followed for communication.

e.g., TCP, FTP, Telnet, SMTP, POP etc.

Port Number

It is used for the unique identity of different applications. It acts as a communication endpoint between applications. The port number associated with the IP address for communication between the applications.

 

MAC address

The MAC is the Media Access control address, the unique identifier of NIC  i.e., Network Interface Controller. The network node has multiple NICs each with a unique MAC address.
